Director Xu Shou-Liang showcases students’works “In order to provide the children of Hualien with better digital learning media, platforms, and equipment, we have upgraded our own educational and technological digital equipment through the Hualien-Taitung Development Fund”, said Xu Shou-Liang, director of the Smart Education Center of the Department of Education, Hualien County Government.“The Hualien County Government is committed to the vision of a smart city and has built a 5G demonstration classroom, a virtual character motion capture studio, and virtual photo studio.”In this digital space, virtual immersion teaching, live streaming and video recording of competitions and interviews, and remote learning can be carried out; a 3D printer allows students to make toys and figurines; a laser engraver allows students to make and assemble three-dimensional objects; and an AR/VR experience area provides novel and creative virtual experiences. Director Xu said that some children, having seen Marvel heroes and dinosaurs on the Internet, would download the files to transfer them to the 3D printers for printing, thus cultivating their basic digital skills in 3D printing and virtual worlds. In addition, they also try to guide the children to use laser engravers to cut out the components of a night light from acrylic and wooden boards, and install a simple USB drive to build a“breathing light”that allows the intensity of a light source to be adjusted. These projects can enhance children’s interest in learning. 91
