88 CHP is the only company in Taiwan with more than 50 years of experience in afforestation. The end-to-end operations have formed a carbon sequestration industry chain from afforestation to pulp manufacturing and paper making. CHP is also a practitioner of a circular economy, using biological substrates, such as cellulose, starch, and other carbohydrates produced through photosynthesis to actively develop raw materials with potential applications. For example,“plastic-free food safety paper”has a paper base, but the fiber surface has been modified to achieve water and oil resistance without requiring PE lamination. After use, the entire paper product can be recycled to become a raw material for paper manufacturing again. The back-end of the recycling application has already been considered from the production of the front- end product, echoing the current ESG thinking and is in line with SDG 12. CHP was recently awarded the Gold Award in the SDG 12“Responsible Consumption and Production”category for its“CircuWell Non-Plastic Fully Recyclable Paper Solution” for sustainable practices and product development. Other awards won by the company include the Asia Pacific Sustainability Award and the Circular Economy Leadership Award at the 2022 Asia Responsible Enterprise Awards. CHP has also collaborated with National Chung Hsing University and planned 0.8 hectares of afforestation land on the plant site, in the hopes of creating a new methodology for Taiwan’s soil carbon sink calculation standard system and help Taiwan develop a complete carbon credits system. This would be seen as a very important part of achieving net zero emissions.
